I fully recommend anything written by Tamora Pierce. Yeah she writes about girls kicking ass, but they're good books. If you're going to start, begin with,
Song of the Lioness: Alanna: The First Adventure or
Circle of Magic: Sandy's Book.
They are both the beginning of different series, and if you read them first, the sequal series will make a lot more sense.
If you have any questions about them ask me. I own every book except for one, because every time I go to the damn book store, they don't have it. Or because I'm borke. Heh...

Okay, here is just a brief summery of each. I'm not going to go into too much detail because well, I'm lazy, get over it. ;D
Let's start with, Song of the Lioness: Alanna the first Adventure.
It's the story of a girl and her twin brother in a land called Tortal. Alanna and her brother Thom are from a fiefdom I believe by the name of Trebond. When the story starts the tow are at home, and their father, Lord Alan, has decided that Alanna will go to the City of the Gods, and learn to use her Gift as a mage I believe. While her brother will go to the capital city of Corus and train to be a knight. Neither of the twins are too happy about the arrangement, so the decide to switch places. The first book is all about Alanna, known as Alan once she is at the palace, because as a female she cannot train to be a knight, so she pretends to be a boy in orfer to earn her shield. In the process she makes new friends, ect. But that's just the first book, there is four in all in the series.

Okay, now for the other book.
Circle of Magic is also a four books series. Sandry's Book
Is about four young people, three girls and one boy. Sandry, Tris, Daja, and Briar. The are all 'found' I guess by the mage Niko and brought to a place called Winding Cricle. A place where they can learn to use their powers. I honestly think that, that is the most detail I can give without spoiling it. It's a good series though.
And sometimes you have to have patience with the books, because it seems like they're moving slowly, but it pays off.
